History

1860 - June 21

Newport, KY

Simon Hubig was born in Newport, KY, in 1860 of German immigrant parents. As the story goes, his father died young and he and his brothers helped their mother start and grow a baking business.

1890

Cincinnati, OH

Right across the Ohio river from the city of his birth, Simon Hubig opened the Simon Hubig Baking Company at age 30 in Cincinnati, OH.
It was said to have had the greatest output of all bakeries in the United States. He sold the company in 1912. The painted "tip tray" below is a relic from that business and depicts the factory in the photo.

1918

Ft. Worth, TX

Following another business venture, Hubig established the Simon Hubig Company. This company grew into a chain with bakeries in several cities in Texas (Dallas, San Antonio, Houston) as well as Memphis, Birmingham, AL, Atlanta, and the New Orleans location.

A March 3, 1918 headline in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram newspaper announced: “Famous Pie Maker Opens Electric Pie Foundry in City.”

1921

The New Orleans location of the Simon Hubig Company opened at 2417 Dauphine St., New Orleans, Louisiana. It would be the only Hubig's location to survive the Great Depression.

2005 - August 29

Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast. New Orleans and surrounding areas suffered major destruction and loss of life. The Hubig's factory was structurally damaged, but because of its location near the Mississippi river it was not flooded.

2006 - January 9

Hubig's reopened after repairing damage from Hurricane Katrina. Read about our re-opening here in the The New York Times (NYT subscribers), or Here (Non-NYT subscribers). In 2006, our workforce was suddenly much smaller as our employees made their way back to New Orleans from evacuations. We had enough employees to make our fried pies, but not enough to also make our baked pies.

Read about our struggles to reopen in The Christian Science Monitor and The Washington Post.

2012 - July 27

The Hubig's bakery at 2417 Dauphine St., New Orleans, LA, burned down. The building was a complete loss. Read about the fire here in The New York Times, or here (Non-NYT subscribers).

2022 - November 7

Hubig’s reopens at new facility in New Orleans, LA, led by the 3rd generation of the Ramsey family to own and operate Hubig’s. The entrance of the new factory features the sign salvaged from the original factory. Read about our reopening here.

As we have for decades, we make pies Sunday-Thursday each week for delivery to stores Monday-Friday. And, we ship pies from our facility to Hubigs.com customers Nationwide.
